Sinn Féin backs TEEU pickets
Sinn Féin Workers’ Rights spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has made clear his party’s support for the industrial action taken by the TEEU at Dublin Port today. Deputy Morgan said that ‘the safety of workers is at the core of this dispute’ and called on people, and other Dublin Port employees, to support their fellow workers.
The Louth TD said: “While the breakdown of talks at the Labour Relations Commission last night is regrettable, I want to make clear Sinn Féin’s support for the action being taken by the TEEU today at Dublin Port.
“Workers at the centre of the dispute are being deployed on tugs without adequate training or equipment. A number of workers have already been suspended and a further five have been removed from the payroll altogether.
“The safety of workers is at the core of this dispute. Management seeks to force maintenance workers to work on Dublin Port tugs without any prior agreement, and without any of the necessary training for sea-going work.
“Workers should not be forced to work in conditions that are unsafe. I am
calling on people to support the pickets in place at Dublin Port and hope
that workers in SIPTU and the Seamen’s Union of Ireland will likewise show
their support for their fellow workers.”
