Morgan calls for public to support ICTU picket

31 January, 2007

Sinn Féin Worker's Rights spokesperson Arthur Morgan today called on the public to support calls from the Irish Congress of Trade Unions for an all-out picket of Dublin Port in support of the suspended Dublin Port workers.

The Louth TD said: "This dispute has arisen out of Dublin Port looking for shore-based workers to go to work on tugs without having the proper training. This is a health and safety issue and workers who are not qualified should not be forced to work in those circumstances, endangering their lives and those of their co-workers.

"An all-out picket of Dublin Port will take place on Tuesday if the dispute is not resolved. The picket will be conducted by various unions organised under the umbrella of the ICTU. Sinn Féin is calling on people, and other Dublin Port staff and fellow workers, to support the industrial action."
