Back Harney or the Nurses warns Ó Caoláin
Speaking after the announcement that nurses have voted overwhelmingly for industrial action in their campaign for a 35 hour week, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD applauded the unanimity of the result, and pledged the party's full support for the campaign. He called on others to make clear whether they stand - with Minister Harney or the nurses.
The Cavan-Monaghan TD said: "The overwhelming support from nurses in the Irish Nurses Organisation and the Psychiatric Nurses Association for industrial action can be seen by the impressive 96% vote in favour of industrial action.
"This result follows a number of regional meetings organised by the unions across the state that have been standing room only and have served to reinforce the commitment of nurses and midwives.
"Nurses and midwives are at the front line of our health services, delivering care to patients in very difficult circumstances because of the gross inadequacy of a health system that successive Governments have failed to reform. Their pay, working conditions and working hours need to be addressed as a matter of priority.
"Sinn Féin fully backs the INO/PNA campaign and urges public support for this industrial action. These workers deserve the support of every political party and of every citizen the length and breadth of this state. People need to make clear where they stand, with the Minister for privatisation and A&E queues, or with our nurses and midwives."
