Human health and poultry industry require urgent Government action - Ó Caoláin

3 February, 2007

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín O Caoláin TD has called on the Irish and British governments to take urgent action to protect human health and the poultry industry in Ireland by immediately banning all poultry imports into the island. He said the confirmation of the H5N1 outbreak in England was a cause of grave concern. The Cavan/Monaghan TD said:

„The first confirmed outbreak of the H5N1 virus in poultry n England requires urgent action. The Irish and British governments should immediately take action to protect human health and to safeguard the poultry industry in Ireland. This virus has the potential to spread to human beings as well as devastating the important poultry sector of our agriculture industry.

"Now is the time for the Minister for Agriculture and Food Mary Coughlan to act before the virus spreads outside the identified outbreak site in Suffolk. All necessary precautions, including a ban on all poultry imports into Ireland, must now be taken. The Minister should make an early statement outlining what measures she proposes to take."ENDS
