Concern at Irish Government Pro-Incineration Lobby
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has expressed concern at reports that the Irish Government is throwing its weight behind attempts to overturn a crucial European Parliament Environment committee decision on incineration.
Ms de Brún said:
"The European Parliament Environment Committee voted in November not to accept a proposal to re-brand municipal incineration as 'waste recovery' rather than 'waste disposal' if they met certain criteria.
"The proposal would have allowed for incinerators to be promoted alongside reuse and recycle instead of being seen as waste disposal and as the least favourable option short of landfill.
"Now a strong industry lobby is trying to overturn the Environment Committee decisions ahead of the European Parliament plenary vote on Tuesday next.
" I am very concerned at reports that Irish Government representatives have joined this pro-incineration lobby and have managed to get some Irish MEPs to go against the Environment Committee decision.
"The debate in Strasbourg on Monday and the vote on Tuesday is one of the most important yet for Ireland and for the environmentally based disposal of waste. I would appeal to Irish MEPs to reject the pro-incineration lobby and to back the Environment Committee stance when it comes to the vote in the Parliament.
"I will be contacting the Irish government to express my concern at the reports that they are actively opposing the environmentally sound option." ENDS
