McElduff Supports Campaign of FE College Lecturers
Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson and West Tyrone Assembly candidate Barry McElduff is publicly supporting the University and College Union (UCU) in their campaign to compel employers to honour a pay agreement moving lecturers towards parity with school teachers.
Mr McElduff met with UCU Regional Official, Jim McKeown in Belfast this week.
Speaking after the meeting Mr McElduff said:
"It should be noted that college lecturers in the North have supported strike action no less than six times in the past six months. I want to support college lecturers in their campaign for parity of pay. I was happy to stand alongside lecturers on the steps of Omagh College in the recent past when they withdrew their labour to stand on the picket line.
"I fully support teachers in securing their due entitlements. Similarly, I support college lecturers who deserve better careers structures and financial remuneration. There is an increasing recognition of the important role of Further Education in delivering a broad and balanced educational curriculum. I believe that the Department for Employment and Learning can do more to appreciate those lecturers and teachers who deliver this education.
"The bottom line is that the employers have already agreed to the parity of pay demand. They need to move decisively on implementing this agreement and to stop denying college lecturers their rights." ENDS
