Welcome for Cowen commitment on Derry- Letterkenny - Dublin Road

14 February, 2007

Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone Pat Doherty today welcomed the comments made by Finance Minister Brian Cowen this morning on the BBC when he confirmed money would be made available from the National Development Plan for the upgrading of the Derry - Letterkenny - Dublin road.

Mr Doherty said:

"In the amended National Development Plan announced last month, 1 Billion Euro is earmarked for the development of a host of infrastructure, economic, education, health and other sector projects in the six counties and border counties.

"Sinn Féin has continually lobbied the Irish government of the necessity to adopt an integrated All-Ireland approach to strategic planning on the island so as to ensure balanced regional development, sustainable growth and to practically plan for Irish Unity

"This included the demand for a motorway/dual carriageway for the N14, A5, N2 route from the North West to Dublin. Sinn Féin have been to the forefront in this campaign. I am happy that the Minister for Finance Brian Cowen this morning indicated on BBC Radio that the finance for such a scheme would be made available. This now needs to be followed through with a firm action plan something which I will be looking forward to tackling in the new Assembly." ENDS
