McDowell grossly hypocritical on Mahon Tribunal

14 February, 2007

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has slammed the Tánaiste and PD leader Michael McDowell for his "gross hypocrisy" over the cost of the Mahon Tribunal.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "In another pre-election effort to be popular, Minister McDowell complains about the cost of the Mahon Tribunal. This is pure hypocrisy. For years many people, including Sinn Féin TDs, have been pointing out the high cost of tribunals due to the failure of the Fianna Fáil/PD Government to restrict the scale of fees being paid to tribunal lawyers. For all that time the government refused to bring in a proper scheme that would prevent the milking of the tribunal by the legal profession.

"Minister McDowell stayed silent while his friends in the Law Library raked in taxpayers' money. He has no credibility now talking about these costs. His real concern is that the tribunal will come up with embarrassing revelations about his Fianna Fáil partners." ENDS
