Ferris calls for support for Rossport Day of Solidarity

15 February, 2007

The Sinn Féin spokesperson on Natural Resources, Martin Ferris TD has called on people to support tomorrow's day of events at Bellanaboy in solidarity with the ongoing campaign against the proposed gas pipeline and refinery. The event will begin with a march from Glenamoy Bridge to the refinery site at 7.30am.

The Kerry North TD said: "I would urge anyone who is able, to attend tomorrow's event in Mayo. While the official line from the company and from the Government is that all of the concerns of local people about this project have been addressed, that is far from the case.

"Serious issues of safety remain unanswered and the main demand of the campaign, that the refining of the gas be carried on off shore, has not been seriously examined. As long as this remains the situation, and as long as the current licensing and revenue terms mean that no real regional or national economic benefits will come from this, the campaign against the Shell led project will continue."
