Maskey wishes Chinese Community a Happy New Year

18 February, 2007

South Belfast Sinn Féin Assembly candidate Alex Maskey has wished the Chinese community a happy New Year in advance of his attendance at an event being held in St George's Market today to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Cllr. Maskey said,
"Today marks the beginning of a week long series of events being held to mark the Chinese New Year 4705.

"The Chinese New Year marks the start of Spring and signals a fresh beginning. I think that it is very apt that we are marking a new beginning here and that as part of that more and more people are beginning to appreciate the rich cultural diversity that we have here and the great benefits that it brings us.

"The Chinese community is well established here and has played vital role in our society. That the Chinese New Year is to be so widely celebrated sends out a great signal to other ethnic groups that they have a place in our society and are to be welcomed here. I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Chinese community a Happy New Year".
