Relegation of Shelbourne should focus minds in need to settle Brandywell future

20 February, 2007

Sinn Féin Derry Assembly election candidate Raymond McCartney has said the relegation of Shelbourne by the FAI should focus minds on the need to get the future of the Brandywell Stadium resolved.

Mr McCartney said:

"The relegation of Shelbourne by the FAI shows the need to focus minds on what the future plans should be for the Brandywell Stadium. Derry City FC and its supporters need the future of the home for the club resolved as speedily as possible.

"To meet with the expectations supporters demand from their club and to come up to European standards it's clear a new stadium is needed. A new stadium would give Derry City FC a solid footing to plan ahead both in footballing and financial terms.

"We must build on the sterling work done by everyone at the club and make sure that Derry City FC never falls into the same situation now facing Shelbourne.

"We need to say clearly now is the time to move, now is the time to make it happen at the Brandywell." ENDS
