Brolly – Move Prison away from Magilligan
Sinn Féin East Derry Assembly candidate Francie Brolly has said that the Magilligan Prison should be closed and relocated from the area to allow the natural tourism potential of Magilligan Strand to be fully developed. He also called for the removal of the British Army Magilligan Barracks and training facilities.
Mr Brolly said:
"In recent discussion with both the British and Irish government Sinn Féin have made it clear that the Magilligan Strand is an area of outstanding natural beauty that should be demilitarised as a priority.
"I have also made it clear to British NIO Minster Paul Goggins that the area is the wrong place for a new prison and that Magilligan Prison should be closed and relocated elsewhere.
"There is a huge potential in the development of tourism in this area to support economic regeneration and develop the local economy. A decaying prison and all the paraphernalia that accompanies a British Army Barracks and training facility is detrimental to the development of that potential." ENDS
