Ferris calls for relief for retired farmers

22 February, 2007

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture, Martin Ferris TD, has reiterated his call for measures to be introduced to provide relief for farmers who were part of the Early Retirement Scheme but who have lost out due to changes introduced by the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, and the failure to index link the payments to take account of inflation.

Deputy Ferris said: "I have raised this issue on a number of occasions and the situation has not improved. Thousands of farmers have been left in a situation where they have lost out significantly and it is incumbent on the EU on the basis of natural justice that they be compensated. While this is something that needs to be rectified at EU level the Irish Government must press strongly for this and ensure that either changes are made, or that some form of compensation package is introduced."
