Resumption of BCG vaccine programme welcomed

22 February, 2007

The resumption of the BCG vaccine programme by the Health Service Executive (HSE) has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Dublin North East Sinn Féin candidate Larry O'Toole. Councillor O'Toole first raised the issue when a constituent contacted him after BCG vaccination for her grandchild was postponed. The matter was taken up by Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD who was told by the HSE that supplies of the vaccine had run out due to a problem with the supplier. Today Deputy Ó Caolain's office has received confirmation from the HSE that supplies have resumed.

Councillor O'Toole said, "I welcome the resumption of this essential vaccination programme. Its postponement was a cause of real worry to many parents. The HSE has stated that problems with three important batches of the vaccine led to the shortage. An improved supply arrived last week and has been available for delivery since Tuesday.

"The HSE should now review its programme to ensure continuity of supply of the BCG vaccine." ENDS
