Sinn Féin raise Castlewellan raw sewage leaks with Water Services

26 February, 2007

Sinn Féin South Down Assembly election Candidate Caitríona Ruane has said that the party has contacted Water Service and demanded that they take immediate steps after raw sewerage and dirty water leaked from drains close to their homes in Station Avenue in Castlewellan.

Ms Ruane said:

"After receiving a number of calls to the local Sinn Féin advice centre from very concerned residents from the Station Avenue area in Castlewellan, Sinn Féin representatives went straight out to the site of the leak.

"It is a shock to say that raw sewage and dirty water had leaked from drains in the area close to homes in the estate and beside waste ground where children play. This is absolutely unacceptable and poses a major health risk to people in the area and Sinn Féin have now demanded that Water Service carryout the necessary maintenance work to ensure this situation is rectified immediately.

"The well documented problems affecting Castlewellan's sewage infrastructure are having a detrimental impact on the lives of people and a long term solution needs to be found. Investment to improve drainage and sewage in the town must be a found otherwise incidents of this nature will continued." ENDS
