Problems on Luas line results in Dublin Bus users being left behind
South Dublin Sinn Féin representative Shaun Tracey has said the problems on the Luas Green Line this morning back up his arguments for bus services to be increased to support the line. Mr. Tracey who was on the 46B this morning said many commuters who usually get the bus were left at the side of the road because buses were full with Luas passengers.
Mr. Tracey said, "For some time now I have been calling for an increase in bus services around the Luas Green Line to ease the problems of overcrowding. This morning's problems on the Green Line resulted in the overcrowding problems being transferred from the Luas to the bus and many everyday Dublin Bus users were left at the side of the road as a consequence. And this is not the first time the Green Line has been closed down at peak time.
"This highlights the need for adequate bus services not only to compliment the Luas and ease overcrowding but to ensure that there are adequate services in place when the Luas line is experiencing problems and to give commuters an option. If there were adequate services in place Dublin Bus would surely recoup some business from commuters not too happy with overcrowding problems on the Luas. However, currently commuters are being denied that option.
"Therefore I am again calling for the 48A to be restored to its original, pre Luas status and for an increase in the frequency of the 44 to Ballyogan and Enniskerry and the 46B to Belarmine. I am also calling for the introduction of Luas feeder routes to and from all the new housing developments in Stepaside and Kilternan.
"Dublin Sinn Féin has called for an extra 500 buses for Dublin Bus to be introduced into the public sector immediately. Currently, Dublin Bus receives one of the lowest Government subsidies in Europe and it is essential that this is significantly increased if we are to end the suffering of Dublin commuters.
"Through such investment the quality of life of our citizens could be drastically improved by establishing an efficient, fast, clean, safe and cheap public transport system. People are spending more time commuting and less time with their families because of government transport mismanagement. Dublin Bus belongs to the people and should be given the appropriate financial support to serve the people." ENDS
