Carrier Bag Initiative represents ‘missed opportunity’

28 February, 2007

Sinn Féin North Antrim Assembly candidate Daithí McKay has said that the 'Carrier Bag Initiative; announced today is a missed opportunity and called for the introduction of a plastic bag levy similar to the one in use in the 26 Counties.

Mr McKay said:

"While it is positive that retailers recognise that they have a responsibility to reduce the overall environmental impact of their carrier bags, and have agreed to reduce the impact by 25% by 2008, the fact is that this is really a missed opportunity to go much further.

"Sinn Féin have long campaigned for the introduction of a plastic bag levy similar to the one in use in the 26 counties. The levy in the south has been a huge success in both reducing plastic bag use and generating revenues. Indeed they are looking to build on this success by increasing the levy from 15c to 25c.

"Sinn Féin want to see the local Assembly given tax varying powers and revenues generated by a plastic bag levy could be ring-fenced and used fund much needed environmental schemes." ENDS
