Sinn Féin position on Water Charges vindicated
South Belfast Sinn Féin Assembly candidate Alex Maskey has said that today's announcement that the Assembly would have the power to scrap the proposed Water Tax has vindicated the Sinn Féin argument against the charges and should now spur on all of the parties to share power and ensure that the Assembly works for the benefit of all of the people.
Cllr. Maskey said,
"Today it was officially confirmed by the Department for Regional Development that a re-established Assembly would have the power to abolish the proposed Water Tax.
"We in Sinn Féin have long argued that the best way to fight against the British Governments attempts to place a tax upon our water is to ensure that we get the power sharing Executive up and running. Today's announcement vindicated this position.
"This announcement should now spur on all of the other political parties to share power and ensure that the Assembly works for the benefit of all of the people here. This places a particular onus on the DUP to commit itself to power-sharing and working in the best interests of all of the people here." CRÍOCH
