Only power sharing Executive will stop Water Charges

1 March, 2007

Sinn Féin South Antrim Assembly candidate Mitchel McLaughlin speaking at the launch of a new Sinn Féin leaflet on Water Charges, Rates Increases and the Economy in North Belfast this morning has said that a power sharing Executive on March 26th is the only way to stop water charges and secure a genuine peace dividend.

Mr McLaughlin said:

"Two big issues coming up on the doorstep are Water Charges and Power Sharing.

"Sinn Féin have already given the clear commitment that in government we will oppose water charges. People should not be forced to pay twice for the failure of successive British Ministers to invest in our water services. We have paid for that investment already. However, the fact is that without power sharing we will not be able to stop water charges.

"There is only one major party in this election that has not committed itself to a power sharing Executive on March 26th, the DUP.

"While no-one trusts the UUP or SDLP over water charges because it was the failed negotiation of Mark Durkan and David Trimble, in the shape of the Reinvestment and Reform Initiative, that led directly to Water Charges, Rates Increases and Privatisation, I believe that all of the parties working in an Executive together can stop water charges and secure the peace dividend that we require to invest in our infrastructure."
