Crowe welcomes commitment to keep St. Muirin’s crèche open
Speaking after Tuesday's adjournment debate in the Dáil which sought clarity on the future of St. Muirin's crèche in Avonbeg in Tallaght, Sinn Féin Community Affairs spokesperson Seán Crowe TD welcomed Minister of State Deputy Michael Ahern's commitment that FÁS and the local management committee have agreed to keep the crèche running until a new crèche facility is provided in the area early next year.
The Dublin South-West TD said, "I initially raised this matter in the Dáil due to the concerns raised by staff working in the crèche and parents whose children attend this valuable local facility. St. Muirin's crèche has operated in the Avonbeg area of Tallaght for the past 16 years and has room for 24 children and employs 12 staff whom are on the community employment scheme.
"Many of the people with children at the crèche are on low incomes, and the fact that it is reasonably priced enables such parents to enter employment or full-time education. These people are unable to afford the exorbitant private sector child care costs.
"I am delighted that the Minister has assured me that this vital local service will remain until a new crèche facility is provided in the area early next year. I further welcome that a temporary refurbishment of the current crèche will be initiated and there will be efforts to improve the surrounding area. This announcement is a success for the local community."
