Decision Day Looms for DUP

4 March, 2007

Sinn Féin South Antrim candidate Mitchel McLaughlin today said that it was clear that the DUP had a big decision to make and only had a few short weeks to make it.

Mr McLaughlin said:

"Peter Hain today once again repeated his view that the DUP were either on board for sharing power by March 26th or the Assembly and Executive would be lost. Our view has been very clear, we a up for sharing power with the DUP. We want to take responsibility. We do not fear getting stuck into the difficult issues which currently need to be dealt with.

"The decision facing Ian Paisley can be boiled down to whether or not he is prepared to send the British Direct Rule Ministers home and accept responsibility or whether the process moves ahead regardless along the joint
partnership arrangements outlined by the two governments.

"It is our hope that Ian Paisley finally comes on board. But if he doesn't the outcome of the recent negotiations ensures that the DUP ability to veto progress has been removed and the rest of us will have to move ahead
regardless." ENDS
