Welcome for end of British Army occupation in South Armagh
Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh Conor Murphy has welcomed the news that the remaining members of the British Army occupying areas in South Armagh are to be removed within weeks.
Mr Murphy said:
"Sinn Féin alone put the demilitarisation agenda at the heart of the political negotiations. The former SDLP Deputy Leader Seamus Mallon conceded at Weston Park that this was an issue which Sinn Féín would have to
resolve alone with the British government. Demilitarisation was of no interest to the SDLP.
"In recent years we have secured significant progress on this issue. I welcome the news that the remaining British Army personnel occupying areas in South Armagh are to be removed from Ireland and returned to their bases
in England and elsewhere.
"It is now important that the British government act decisively to end the occupation of lands in Ireland and work with local communities to undo the damage caused by the deployment of their war machine in our country." ENDS
