Sinn Féin will oppose every section of European Communities Bill at all stages
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus O Snodaigh has reiterated Sinn Féin's complete opposition to the European Committees Bill 2007 which is going through the Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs this morning.
Speaking at the Committee this morning Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "We are absolutely opposed to the European Communities Bill 2006. Sinn Féin will oppose every section of this Bill at every stage.
"The Bill represents a quantum leap in terms of Ministerial power. Allowing Ministers to create indictable criminal offences and sanctions, including imprisonment, by regulations without Oireachtas input or oversight is a dictatorial way of doing business. It is not acceptable to Sinn Féin.
"This Bill which also seeks to have sweeping retrospective effect must be seen as a component part of the now snowballing democratic deficit at the heart of the EU project and this government's relations with it. Where will this end? When every legally binding decision impacting on the lives of the people are taken by government Ministers acting alone in Brussels?" ENDS
