Sinn Féin is hosting a major drugs conference in Dublin today

Sinn Féin representative for Dublin North East Councillor Larry O¹Toole today announced details of a major conference on Dublin¹s growing drugs crisis, which will take place in the Clarion Hotel IFSC, North Wall Quay,
Dublin 1 today, Monday 12th.

The conference which is being sponsored by Councillor O'Toole alongside colleagues Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD and MEP Mary Lou McDonald will be addressed by a range of speakers addressing drugs prevention and education, treatment and rehabilitation and supply and control.

Among the speakers are Donnchadh Hurley BRYR Ballymun Youth project, Paul Quigley GP, an addiction specialist and Rick Lines the Executive Director of the Irish Penal Reform Trust

The conference will begin at 10am and is open to the media.

Councillor O¹Toole said:

"The government's drugs strategy is failing dismally. Recent seizures are very welcome but they also highlight the scale of the problem before us. We need a new approach to deal with the devastating illegal drugs trade and
it's shattering effect on working class communities.

"As well as a law & order approach we need to tackle the drugs epidemic from a range of other angles. We need to look at education in our schools, at health policy and the provision of detoxification beds, at sustained and
planned economic investment in disadvantaged areas.  Tomorrow's conference brings together groups and individuals from across Dublin city to look at new innovative approaches to tackling the drugs crisis."ENDS
