'Taigs Out' grafitti daubed in Rasharkin

13 March, 2007

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said that the DUP must show more political leadership and tackle sectarianism within the Unionist community. His comments come in the wake of more anti-Catholic grafitti - 'Taigs Out' - being daubed in Rasharkin.

Mr McKay said:

"Clearly more needs to be done to tackle the sectarian attitudes that exist which lead to these incidents.

"Sectarianism, from whatever quarter it comes from, is wrong and Sinn Féin have been consistent in condemning it across the board. The grafitti daubed here in Rasharkin is not only racist it is intimidatory and follows in the wake of similar comments being written in Ballymoney Town.

"Sectarianism should not be allowed to fester within our community and there is a clear onus on all of us, especially political parties, to stamp it out. Its about time the DUP took a strong stance and showed some leadership on this issue. It is only by showing leadership that society here can be moved forward." ENDS
