Phoenix Gas should follow Firmus price cap lead

15 March, 2007

Sinn Féin Economy Spokesperson, South Antrim MLA Mitchel McLaughlin has welcomed the announcement by Firmus Energy that it will cap the price of gas across its network until January 2008 and called on Phoenix Gas to follow their lead.

Mr McLaughlin said:

"This announcement shows an important commitment to price stability from Firmus. Phoenix Gas should follow their lead and guarantee its customers that it will cap prices for the incoming year. The fact that Phoenix prices are considerably higher than those of Firmus will not be lost on those with concerns about the nature of the monopoly position enjoyed by Phoenix in greater Belfast and the nature of their licence.

"Phoenix has made a welcome commitment to lower prices they now need to deliver on that promise.

"Sinn Féin are firmly behind the development of a single all-Ireland energy market that is built upon low prices and price stability and a strategy that can eliminate the very high levels of fuel poverty that exist not just in the north but right across Ireland.

"Stable gas prices, reduced electricity costs and a commitment to expanding and developing energy from renewables must be central to the future." ENDS
