Judge’s comments sinister and dangerous – Ó Snodaigh
Responding to comments reportedly made by a District Court Judge in Monaghan that he would blow the head off anyone who came into his house and to the publication yesterday of the Criminal Law (Defence of Life and Property) Bill 2007 Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh accused both the Judge and the Minister of sending a sinister and dangerous message.
Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "The comments of Judge Seán MacBride call into question the impartiality of this particular judge and his ability to objectively administer justice given his strongly held view that the death penalty is an appropriate sanction for trespass.
"Clearly this dangerous Bill is an election ploy because a year ago when similar right-wing populist legislation was tabled by FG Minister McDowell was opposed to it, yet now just months before an election he produces his own legislation. The government are now feeding into the attitudes of Judge MacBride and others who think they can go around shooting people at will. There is no death penalty in this country and while individuals absolutely have the right to defend themselves they must not be given the right to act as judge, jury and executioner over anyone who may happen to come into their garden."
