Sinn Féin to meet PSNI over Lurgan Orange Parade

15 March, 2007

Sinn Féin Assembly member for Upper Bann John O'Dowd will lead a party delegation to meet with the PSNI tomorrow morning at the Craigavon Civic Centre at 11am to discuss concerns surrounding an attempt by the Orange Order to parade through Lurgan town centre on St. Patrick's Day.

Speaking today in advance of the meeting Mr O'Dowd said:

"Nationalists in Lurgan have very real concerns over the decision of the Orange Order to file to march through the town centre on St. Patrick's Day. This is not a traditional parade and many believe that it is deliberately provocative and designed to raise tensions in the town at this time.

"Given these concerns and the obvious risk of serious trouble resulting from this coat trailing exercise I have requested talks with the senior commanders in PSNI in Lurgan with responsibility for policing this parade on Saturday. This meeting will take place tomorrow morning in the Civic Centre at 11am." ENDS
