Community anger at Crossmaglen Incidents

20 March, 2007

Sinn Féin Newry and Armagh MP Conor Murphy has said that he shared the anger of the vast majority of the community at the incidents in Crossmaglen which he said had caused damage and distress in the locality. The MP who had been in the area along with other Sinn Féin elected representatives and members of the Community Safety Group also confirmed that some older people had left their homes due to their worries about damage and safety.

Mr Murphy said:

"The people that have been most harmed through these incidents are the local community. It is unfortunate that the real focus here, the fact that a military helicopter narrowly missed crashing into homes has now been overshadowed.

The MP, who expressed a disappointment that there had been incidents later on, added:

"People from the local community and local elected representatives were active on the ground encouraging young people to move away from the area. When I left just after 10pm the area was quiet as the majority of young people had listened to parents and ourselves." ENDS
