New law on Private Tenancies will let unscrupulous landlords off the hook

20 March, 2007

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson, Fra McCann MLA has said that while there are many positives in the new legislation on private tenancies that there is a very real concern that it will still allow unscrupulous landlords to abuse the system.

Mr McCann said:

"There are some important positives in this new legislation covering private tenancies, particularly in relation to housing 'fitness' and I welcome the legal requirement to provide rents controls in properties that are deemed unfit.

"However, there is still far to much scope for unscrupulous private landlords too abuse the system not least in terms of keeping properties up to stand and some sort of wider approach to controlling rents.

"The unregulated and unfettered growth of the buy-to-let market and the activities of unscrupulous private landlords is meaning that many people are being forced out of the housing market and that there is an increasing demand for both social and affordable housing that is just not being met."
