Phoenix Gas price cut welcomed
Sinn Féin North Belfast MLA Carál Ní Chuilín has welcomed the announcement that Phoenix Gas will cut its prices by 14.6% to customers in the greater Belfast area.
Ms Ní Chuilín said:
"This price cut is both welcome and long overdue. However, no one should forget that Phoenix put its prices up by 14.5% last September, on top of a 17% increase in January 2006 and a massive 30% in September 2005.
"The fact is that local people, people on low incomes have struggled to meet the rising costs of heating their homes. We now need to see further price cuts delivered and would have also liked to have seen a commitment to a cap on prices as part of a long term commitment to lower fuel prices and price stability.
"All energy costs are still relatively high and this is reflected in the very very high levels of fuel poverty that exist in this part of Ireland.
"While this will be good news for thousands of people in Belfast we still need to see a genuine strategy for the elimination of fuel poverty that includes more financial support of sustainable green energy alternatives that can deliver good price stability and low energy costs as well as the development of the single all-Ireland energy market."
