Sinn Féin public meeting on housing Tuesday 20 March
Sinn Féin Dublin Mid West general election candidate Joanne Spain will host
a public meeting on housing in Neilstown Community Centre, Clondalkin at 8pm
Tuesday, 20 March. The meeting will be addressed by Ms Spain, Seán Crowe,
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin South West and Clondalkin Cllr. Shane O'Connor.
Ms
Spain said:
"The largest case file in my office pertains to housing
cases. I am approached everyday by people who have been waiting anything
from five to nine years on South Dublin County Council's social housing
list. I am also asked for help by people who can't get on the social housing list,
but cannot afford 'affordable' housing which starts at €260,000.
The
average cost of a Dublin house, at €427,650, is out of this world for
many of my constituents.
"These aren't just people trying to get
on the property ladder. These are people who are living in overcrowded
conditions and who are often facing homelessness. They are people who have
been priced completely out of the housing market and need Government help.
Many of them are being forced to rely on homeless agencies such as Focus
Ireland while
they wait for the Government to deal with the housing
crisis, which now sees 44,000 people on the housing waiting list across this
state.
"At tomorrow's meeting I will be talking about some of the
worst cases I have dealt with in recent times. My colleague Seán Crowe will
be discussing the housing policies our party would implement in Government
and Shane O'Connor will be there to give advice and
information to
those dealing with South Dublin County Council's housing department. Sinn
Féin has an excellent reputation for dealing with this difficult issue
and we are offering a warm welcome to anybody who wishes to come along and
talk about their experiences
tomorrow night." ENDS
