Welcome for funding for Newcastle Health Clinic

22 March, 2007

The Chairperson of Down District Council, Cllr Willie Clarke MLA, has welcomed this week's announcement of £9.5 million capital expenditure for Newcastle's Health and Care Centre in Park Avenue in the town.

Cllr Clarke said:

"This is an important announcement which is set to accommodate an enhanced, local, integrated primary care and children's services as well as general practitioner services, a community rehabilitation team, enhanced AHP provision, community nursing and community mental health provision and capacity for diagnostics and ICATS.

"The Clinic on Park Avenue provides a vital service for the people of Newcastle but the site is not big enough to accommodate the new health and care centre. The Trust is now attempting to acquire a council-owned site in the Newcastle area that is suitable in terms of location, size, accessibility, and acceptability and Sinn Féin will support them in their efforts. It is my understanding that at this stage of the process, the proposals are for a 3 storey building of almost 4,000 sq metres and this must be secured as a matter of priority." ENDS
