Friday Deadline for Winter Fuel Payment Claims

28 March, 2007

Sinn Féin North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay has urged people aged 60 and over still needing to claim their Winter Fuel Payment to do so before Fridays deadline.

Mr McKay said

"I would encourage people aged 60 and over that still need to claim their winter fuel payment that they must do so before the deadline this coming Friday 30th March.

"People should not need to apply for the Winter Fuel Payment if they have received it previously, or are already claiming State Pension or another social security benefit (other than Housing Benefit, or Child Benefit).

"Those who haven't received a Winter Fuel Payment before, or who are not in receipt of a relevant social security benefit in the qualifying week will need to make a claim .The Winter Fuel Payment is not means-tested or taxable.

"Most people will automatically receive their winter fuel payment and do not have to claim. But people aged 60 to 64 who do not get a retirement pension should claim the Winter Fuel Payment. You don't have to be receiving any particular benefit to get a Winter Fuel Payment - you qualify simply by your age.

"You can get a claim form by calling the Winter Fuel Payment helpline 08459 151 515. Lines are open Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm." ENDS
