Ferris slams loss of Atlantic Dawn quota
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris TD, has slammed the fact that the fish quota allocated to the Atlantic Dawn will now be lost to the Irish fleet following the sale of the vessel to a Dutch consortium. Deputy Ferris was responding to a reply in the Dáil yesterday from Minister John Browne. The new owners will be entitled to retain the quota for two years.
Deputy Ferris said: "This is nothing short of disgraceful. In the first instance many of us criticised the fact that such a large part of the Irish quota had been allocated to one vessel at the expense of smaller operators. Now, to compound matters that quota will be lost to the Irish fleet for two years.
"I strongly condemn this and call for the quota remaining with the Atlantic Dawn to be retained within this country and reallocated among the pelagic fleet."
