Morgan - time for government to put incineration on the back burner

1 April, 2007

Sinn Féin Environment spokesperson Louth TD Arthur Morgan has welcomed reports in today’s media that Indaver Ireland is to abandon plans to build incinerators in Cork and Meath.  Deputy Morgan said he hopes that this is not a pre-election stunt from the company and he will raise the matter in the Dáil this week.

Deputy Morgan said:

“There will be relief among communities across the North East if it is true that Indaver Ireland is to shelve plans for an incinerator at Carranstown and it will be a vindication of the campaign fought by people across the region.

“However I hope that this announcement is not a pre-election stunt from the company.  I intend to raise the issue in the Dáil this week to get clarification on what is going on.  I believe that it is time the government put their incineration plans on the back burner.

“Sinn Féin is opposed to incineration and we believe that it is a totally counter productive technology.  Irish recycling rates have increased significantly in recent years demonstrating that where infrastructure is in place Irish people will reduce reuse and recycle."ENDS
