Ferris claims report is indictment of Fishing Policy

2 April, 2007

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris TD, has claimed that Bord Iascaigh Mhara's annual report is a further indictment of both Government and EU policy towards the Irish fishing industry. The report forecasts further cuts in the Irish fleet despite increased demand for seafood.

Deputy Ferris said: "This report is further confirmation that the mismanagement of the Irish fisheries sector under the Common Fisheries Policy has been disastrous for Irish coastal communities. A natural resource of huge potential has been squandered mainly to the benefit of foreign fleets.

"Now Irish fishermen are being expected to pay the cost through decreasing quota and decommissioning of vessels. The ironic aspect of all of this is, as the report points out, that demand for seafood is at an all time high. The very least the Government should do therefore is ensure that control of the Irish fisheries is taken away from Brussels and that policy is made in the interests of Irish fishermen and the overall sector, and that what remains of the fishery is used to prmote a bigger domestic processing sector to ensrue that maximum value is retained in this country rather than being taken by foreign fleets."
