Crowe welcomes all-Ireland travel scheme for elderly

2 April, 2007

Sinn Féin Transport Spokesperson Seán Crowe TD has welcomed the introduction of the free all-Ireland travel scheme for elderly people. Speaking today Deputy Crowe said a first class modern public transport system is now needed to improve the quality of life for all of Ireland's citizens particularly the elderly.

Deputy Crowe said, "Today's introduction of the free travel scheme for pensioners is very welcome. Sinn Féin has been calling for this scheme for a long time now. Our elderly people will now be able to travel anywhere in the country and visit family and friends without the worry of affording the fares.

"However, the lack of infrastructure, particularly in rural Ireland, will mean that this scheme will be irrelevant to many pensioners. What is now needed is a first class modern public transport system. This will improve the quality of life for all of Ireland's citizens particularly the elderly." ENDS
