Waiting list commitments must be matched by more funding for community care

4 April, 2007

Newly appointed Sinn Fein Health Spokesperson, North Belfast MLA Carál Ní Chuilín has welcomed the progress on hospital waiting lists but said that new commitments on further improvements must be matched by new commitments to funding increases in the provision of community care.

Ms Ní Chuilín said:

"There is welcome progress in tackling waiting lists. However, new commitments on further improvements must be matched by new commitments to funding increases in the provision of community care.

"We need to develop a truly holistic approach to our health services that must include proper funding for community health services that can help prevent people ending up in hospital and can support people leaving hospital as soon as possible.

"As the shocking revelations about Knockbracken Hospital have shown us the picture is far from rosy. Across the north, and it is particularly acute in areas such as North and West Belfast, there are serious problems in mental health provision.

"The bottom line is that we now need to see an expansion of community care supported by sustainable funding." ENDS
