Sinn Féin welcome increased co-operation between Wrightbus and Irish Government

5 April, 2007

Sinn Fein North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay has welcomed the increased co-operation between the Irish Government and local company Wrightbus. Mr McKay said it was another example of how all-Ireland co-operation makes sense but added that there are still issues that need resolved around the company's employment record.

Mr McKay said:

"It is quite clear that increased all-Ireland co-operation on economic matters like this makes sense and is of immense benefit to the North Antrim area. This is something that many Unionists as well as Nationalists and Republicans can agree on.

"The Irish Government, as a customer of Wrightbus, is absolutely entitled to raise the matter of the under representation of Catholics in the company and we will be pushing them to do so. We welcome further investment and all-Ireland co-operation in the North Antrim area but that does not mean that we should turn a blind eye to outstanding issues around equality.

"We also welcome the steps taken by Ian Paisley in welcoming Minister Martin Cullen to the area and hope that recent political developments will now help bring to an end the problems that North Antrim has faced in regard to inequality and sectarianism." ENDS
