Sinn Féin welcome Age Concern 'Your Rights' Campaign

11 April, 2007

Sinn Féin Equality spokesperson, Foyle MLA Martina Anderson has welcomed a new campaign by Age Concern called "Your Rights" which is aimed at helping older people claim an extra £100m in benefits by April of 2008.

Ms Anderson said:

" This latest campaign titled "Your Rights" from Age Concern has to be welcomed. I have been highlighting over recent months the amount of unclaimed benefits by older people and the need for more awareness programmes to help get people what they are entitled to.

"There are many financial problems faced by older people be it fuel poverty, mortgage debt ,pension credits and the need for free universal TV licences . Anything that can help ease that pressure on any of these issues in financial terms must be welcomed. Many older people still agonise about whether or not to heat their homes in the cold weather or buy food and clothes and that is totally wrong.

"Thousands of older people are missing out on money that is rightfully theirs and could make a great difference to their quality of life and ease a lot of stress they are living under.

"Again I would appeal to all older people to contact their local welfare rights office, citizens advice centre, make an appointment and go along and see what they may be entitled to and get help filling in the forms for various benefits." ENDS
