Sinn Féin to host 'Putting children first' public meeting in Lucan

16 April, 2007

Sinn Féin Dublin Mid West general election candidate Joanne Spain will host a public meeting entitled 'Putting Children first' on Tuesday 17 April at 8pm in the Spa Hotel, Lucan. The meeting will also be addressed by Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin Marylou McDonald and by Aengus Ó Snodaígh.

Ms Spain said:
"Sinn Féin believes that every child is born equally and the we should cherish our children. Despite unprecedented wealth in this state over the last ten years, the Government has not invested in our future generations the way it could have.

"We do not have enough schools. Every day I am getting phone calls from families in Lucan tearing their hair out because they cannot get their children's names down for a school place. The ones we do have are overcrowded and often under-resourced.

"Minister for Health Mary Harney wants to shut down two hospitals that have serviced children on the south side of Dublin for years. Even though there is a huge young population in Dublin, the Government feels it needs only one children's hospital.

"We also have a childcare crisis that is really negatively impacting on not just our quality of life but also our economy.

"These are just some of the areas pertaining to children where the Government has let us down. As the mother of a young child, I am passionate about representing the needs of both parents and children and only Sinn Féin is equipped with the policies to tackle these needs effectively." ENDS
