Ó Snodaigh endorses City-Wide campaign for a new deal on drugs

16 April, 2007

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has endorsed the City-Wide Drugs Crisis Campaign for a new deal on drugs. Speaking at the press conference organised by the City-Wide group to launch the campaign Deputy Ó Snodaigh said in Government Sinn Féin would implement campaign's proposed new deal.

He said, "The Government needs to make the drugs crisis a priority and make the required resources available to make an impact in the fight against drugs. To do this the Government must admit that there is a crisis.

"There is an urgent need for more detox beds, rehabilitant supports and supports for families. It is now a quarter of a century since heroin was identified as a major problem yet there has never been proper resources put into the fight against it and we are here today again calling for resources.

"Sinn Féin endorses the call for a new deal on drugs and we are committed to providing that deal if we are a party in Government after the election."

Speaking after the press conference Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "The failure of the Minister of State Noel Ahern to show up at today's event is reflective of the Government's attitude towards the crisis - it just doesn't register. He has snubbed all those people fighting against drugs just as he has abandoned communities to fight the drugs crisis alone." ENDS
