PSNI need to do a lot more than carry out internal investigation into

18 April, 2007

Sinn Féin Assembly member for North Antrim Daithí McKay today said that the PSNI needed to do a lot more than carry out an internal investigation into why details stored on their computer system ended up in the hands of unionist paramilitaries.

Mr McKay said:

"As each day goes by another piece of this collusion jigsaw is put in place. Over 100 nationalists and republicans are on a UVF list. They have been told their lives are under a significant and real threat. This information
emanated from the PSNI computer and RIR files. The PSNI need to do a lot more than hold an internal investigation if they are to satisfy nationalist and republican concerns.

"We have yet to hear from Hugh Orde or any of his senior colleagues on this matter. People under threat have been given the minimal amount of information. We have not been told where the PSNI worker involved was based
or what information he had access to. The RIR member involved has not been charged and as far as we know is still working and still has access to sensitive files. This entire situation is a disgrace.

"Gerry Adams will today raise this very serious matter with the British Prime Minister Tony Blair. People are demanding answers. We need to hear directly from Hugh Orde and Peter Hain. Hiding behind internal PSNI
investigations will simply not wash." ENDS
