Traveller shot and injured at West Belfast site

20 April, 2007

Sinn Féin Assembly member for West Belfast Jennifer McCann this evening appealed to members of the Travelling community to remain calm after a member of that community was shot and injured close to the Twinbrook estate
this evening.

Ms McCann said:

"Initial reports suggest that a man was shot on a small Traveller site close to the Twinbrook estate this afternoon. The man has been injured and taken to hospital. It is believed that the shooting is linked to a dispute within
the Travelling community.

"This shooting took place in broad daylight in front of local children. It is unacceptable and I would appeal to member of the Travelling community to stay calm and resolve this dispute through dialogue.

"I am prepared to meet with the families involved in this dispute in an effort to examine whether we can end this feud without further resort of violence." ENDS
