Masonic British Army Spy Post dismantled

25 April, 2007

Sinn Féin Equality Spokesperson, Foyle MLA Martina Anderson has welcomed the news that the British Army has begun removing the Spy Post at the Masonic British Army Camp on Bishop Street Derry today.

Ms Anderson said.

"In recent weeks we have seen the welcome removal of the spy post in Rosemount and now today at the Masonic British Army Camp on Bishop Street. This military spy post has been blight on Bogside community for far too long. Local people will be glad to see the back of this eyesore and those who spied on them from within it.

"The continued existence of this spy post overlooking the City's Walls has also stopped progress in the regeneration of the Bishop Street area and tourism sector in the city .It is vitally important that the return of this land is done as quickly as possible so that people can get with the job of work at hand.

"Sinn Féin are determined to ensure that all British Army forces are removed from our communities and that land stolen and occupied be returned to their rightful owners or put to community use." ENDS
