Sinn Féin calls on Taoiseach to intervene to resolve nurses' dispute

28 April, 2007

Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has called on the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to immediately intervene to help resolve the dispute between the nursing unions and the HSE.  He was speaking as talks between the HSE and nursing unions are due to resume.  Deputy Ó Caolain said:

“The INO and PNA claims in relation to a shorter working week and pay anomalies are justified and progress should be made on them without delay. These are not new claims and the nurses are understandably frustrated at lack of progress to date.

“There is an obligation on the wider trade union movement to unreservedly support the nurses’ campaign at this time. The principle of solidarity with front-line public service workers campaigning for justice should transcend any other considerations to do with partnership agreements or benchmarking.

“We call on the Taoiseach to intervene immediately to help resolve the dispute between the nursing unions and the HSE.” ENDS
