Anger as Tax Credit computer sends bank details wrong addresses

2 May, 2007

Sinn Féin Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew MLA has said that her constituency office has been inundated with complaints after the Tax Credit computer sent out bank details of recipients to the wrong addresses.

Ms Gildernew said:

"There is a long history of problems with the Tax Credit system, particularly with hundreds of people being wrongly assessed or forced to pay back huge overpayments that were generated by problems within the system.

"My constituency office in Dungannon has now been inundated with complaints after the Tax Credit computer sent out bank details of recipients to the wrong addresses.

"This information is sent to recipients as part of confirmation of their Tax Credit award.

"This is obviously very very serious.

"I am also very concerned to learn that the Tax Credit Office has no idea whatsoever of how many people might be affected.

"The fact that the Tax Credit Office is based in Britain only compounds the difficulties in getting these problems sorted out." ENDS
