New Guidelines on Premium Rate Quiz Competitions
Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed new rules being introduced by the regulatory watchdog group Icstis for TV quiz shows which operate premium rate phone line competitions.
Mr McCartney said:
"Sinn Féin have been consistent in our calls for more stringent guidelines to be introduced to tackle both the rise premium rate phone competitions operated by the big TV companies and for the extra help that is needed for those who have gambling addictions.
"Under the new rules being introduced contestants must now be warned if they spend more than £10 on phone calls and must be told how many other people are calling to try to take part.
"Hopefully this will be just the start of the a process and that the regulatory watchdog group Icstis will bring in tougher guidelines across all types of TV and online gambling.
"I would also appeal if anyone thinks a family member or that a friend has a gambling addiction that they seek help. There are numerous organisations out there that can help. I would encourage those who feel they have a problem to actually speak to someone, one of the hardest things for a partner or friend in such difficult circumstances to do is to take that extra step to seek help, failure not to seek help could lead to losing family, friends, job and their home."
