Derry Sinn Féin in Donegal All-Ireland election battle

4 May, 2007

Sinn Féin activists from Derry have been living up to their 'All-Ireland' responsibilities by campaigning in Donegal North East and South West for the upcoming 26 County general election. As well as helping out throughout the wider Donegal area Derry Sinn Féin has been 'twinned' with the Donegal North East and South West constituencies in which we hope to see Donegal's Sinn Fein Councillors Pádraig Mac Lochlainn and Pearse Doherty make history by being elected as Sinn Féin TD's for Donegal for the first time.

Speaking about the work being done by Derry Sinn Féin activists in Donegal, Foyle MLA Martina Anderson said,

"Sinn Féin is going into this election campaign in a stronger position than ever before. As part of the process of twinning constituencies throughout Ireland, activists from Derry have been working with our comrades in Donegal, particularly the Donegal North East and South West constituencies. This work will continue for next three weeks when we will be seeking a mandate for real change and equality. Our objective is to be in government, North and South and to deliver strong public services and to advance the peace process and preparations for Irish unity.

"Over the past decade, republicans have proven our ability not just to negotiate successfully to advance the peace process but also to show leadership by taking major and sometimes difficult decisions in the national interest. Dramatic progress has been made. Sinn Féin and the DUP are going to head the power-sharing government in the north and Sinn Féin's five Government Ministers will work hard in the interests of everyone on this island. We are about delivering for Ireland's future.

"Sinn Féin is ready for government, North and South. Over the next three weeks we will be campaigning on a daily basis the length and breadth of the country seeking a mandate for real change and equality. Activists from Derry are proud to be playing their role in helping to make such a mandate a reality through their hard work on behalf of Padraig, Pearse and all of the people of Donegal as an all Ireland party."
